Some friends and I get together once a week and play a mean game of Scrabble. I'm not sure we really want to play but rather gossip, eat desserts and drink tea. Each one of us tries to win and we secretly compete to have the best goodie. My cooking doesn't hold a candle to the rest so I go out of my way to impress them in some other way.
I thought I'd make some interesting sugar cubes for our tea on Valentine's Day.
You start with one cup of sugar, add 1 teaspoon of dried egg whites and 1 Tablespoon of water along with a drop or two of red food coloring.
You can use only water, but egg whites make the cubes stronger. I tried to use regular eggs whites and ran into trouble. They are so gooey that it's hard to separate out a Tablespoon. The white hangs together. (I'm sure there's some scientific word for this) So powdered egg whites are the answer.
Mix it in a food processor until it resembles wet sand.
And now comes the hard part. WAIT. You need to let this set in the mold for 24 hours.
I'm going to put some corny tag on this that says "Sweethearts for my Sweetheart" or some such nonsense. After all, if you can't be sentimental on Valentine's Day, when can you?
