A few years ago I kept seeing lovely printed finger towels at all the swanky boutiques. You know those finger towels - the ones you put in your powder room for guests? You threaten your family with death if they use them and your guests are afraid to mess them up. (do they dry their hands with toilet paper?) But boy, they make your powder room look like a high end joint.
Nothing is too good for my powder room. I'll make those rubes I invite over think I stole my finger towels from some posh hotel in Paris.
plain, smooth textured finger towels (I used cotton; linen should work too -I don't know about polyester)
Xylol* (available at hardware stores)
old credit card
ironDownload the page of crowns here. Print them from your computer then copy on a copy machine. Important!
Cut the four crowns apart. Center one on the lower front of a towel, print side down. Wet a wadded sheet of paper towel with Xylol. Hold one edge of the image and wipe the back with the saturated paper towel.
The image will not transfer yet. Take your old credit card and firmly pull it across like a squeegee. Lift one corner to check on your progress then continue to rub over any areas that haven't transferred.
Before I discovered the credit card trick, I just added more Xylol. This resulted in a ring as shown above. No, no.
Allow to sit about 1/2 hour to let the Xylol evaporate, then heat set your image by ironing on the reverse side with a hot iron. Important! Ten seconds should do it. Use a pressing cloth or copy paper to avoid any scorching.
Throw into the washer and dryer for the poshest finger towels in the neighborhood.
