I've been wanting to make chocolate bowls for quite awhile. What better excuse than St. Patrick's day?
Blow up a balloon to the desired size; in my case, 2 1/2" in diameter. It's about as small as you can blow a balloon. Obviously, if you have dessert eaters with hearty appetites, blow more and go bigger. Spray the balloon with Pam. Melt a cup of candy melts or chocolate chips for about 1 1/2 minutes in the microwave. We want it just melted, not boiling hot. Dunk the balloon into the chocolate.
What good is a pot if you don't have some gold? I found some gold pearl dust at a kitchen speciality shop. (Sur le Table) It's available online too.
I put two scoops of pistachio ice cream (mint chocolate chip would do as well) into my bowl then, with a paint brush, added some of the gold dust. You can make these bowls a day or two ahead and freeze them.
Serve with rainbow cookies. The directions are here.

Pull the balloon out of the chocolate and let it drip for a few seconds then place it on some parchment or waxed paper. Hold it for a few minutes until the chocolate sets a bit and the balloon stands upright by itself. Place it in the refrigerator until completely set.
Cut a tiny hole in the top of the balloon and let the air slowly escape. Carefully pull the balloon out of the chocolate shell. The chocolate, especially near the top may crack. You can repair small cracks with more melted chocolate. I suggest making extra shells to allow for mistakes.
If the top is ragged, place a piece of parchment or waxed paper in a skillet over a hot burner. Rest the open end of the bowl on the paper for a few seconds until the top has melted and evened out. What good is a pot if you don't have some gold? Yum!
cute!
Aren't these great! I used to make them all the time (before children) and fill them with chocolate mousse and top w/ strawberries fans. It made for a really romantic dessert. A couple of years ago we made chocolate bags for a youth group valentine's dinner. They were placed on the table with strawberries spilling out. The kids loved them!
So cool! I tried to do this years ago and the balloons popped and chocolate went everywhere. I haven't tried again since =o)
Oh my kids would love this! Thanks for sharing I can't wait to try it :)

My sympathies are with you girls who experienced chocolate pot disasters. I'm a total slob especially in the kitchen and I was able to make about 12 of these without a hitch. Try,try, try once more.

Cute result! Slightly concerned about using non-food rated balloon against warm chocolate, so I would grease up the bottom of a tiny prep bowl or thick glass. Glass would be reuseable, no plastic waste.
While I love your concern about the foodworthiness (is that a word?) of the balloon, I think you may be a little too concerned, after all, it is made for us to put in our mouths to blow up. In any case, I sprayed the balloon with Pam so that is what came in contact with the chocolate.
I would be very interested to see if your suggestion of using a bowl or glass would work. If you greased it up enough, I'm wondering if the chocolate would cling to the surface or just pool off. If you didn't grease it enough, the chocolate would cling too well and the glass wouldn't slip out.
I've never seen anything like this before. What a great idea!

To follow up on using glass, I found these instructions which involve shot glasses: http://www.ehow.com/how_5084100_make-chocolate-shot-glasses.html
I just tried a smooth frozen jar from the freezer. Turned it upside down (without oiling) and daubed on melted dipping chocolate with a knife. It hardened and slid off easily. I planned to pour lukewarm water inside the jar to help pop off the chocolate, but that wasn't necessary.
Thanks for the initial inspiration!
