Wire Cloche

I've spotted some wire cloches lately and have become intrigued. Always up for a challenge, I thought I'd try to make one.

hardware cloth (hardware store)
wooden turnings (craft store)
dry wall screw
black spray paint

small metal bowl
strong scissors or wire cutters
screw driver
hot glue gun

Cut the hardware cloth so it wraps loosely around the metal bowl. Make it any length you like. It's best to take off all the sharp little protruding wires. Wrap it into a cylinder and sew the two long ends together with a thin piece of wire.

Fold the hardware cloth over the metal bowl. Using hands and any tools necessary (hammers and mallets come to mind), form the domed end. Place your hand into the bowl and roll it on a hard surface to smooth and compress the pleats.

Drill pilot holes in the middle of your wooden turning(s). Place a washer inside the cloche and thread the screw through the washer and into the turning(s) on the top, sandwiching the hardware cloth between the washer and the turnings.

Use hot glue to finish the base and seal any sharp ends.

Spray it black. Place a treasure inside and smile modestly when everyone admires your handiwork.

I have been eying wire cloches, but didn't want to buy one. Thank you for this ingenious idea. Do you have a cost breakdown. I didn't know there was such a thing as hardware cloth.

Rene said...

Wow you did a great job! Thanks for the inspiration.

So glad you could join the party!

Erin said...

Wow!!! I can't believe you made that! Fantastic!

Gail said...

Hardware cloth is at any hardware store. It comes in several widths, lengths and size of holes. A small role with small openings should be less than $5. You could make lots of cloches with that one roll. The turning (which, btw, was a wooden snowman - can you see it?) was probably $1. Pretty cheap.

Tony and Kimra said...

WOW. I LOVE the look of it! totally my style
