I've spotted some wire cloches lately and have become intrigued. Always up for a challenge, I thought I'd try to make one.
hardware cloth (hardware store)
wooden turnings (craft store)
dry wall screw
black spray paint
small metal bowl
strong scissors or wire cutters
hot glue gun
Cut the hardware cloth so it wraps loosely around the metal bowl. Make it any length you like. It's best to take off all the sharp little protruding wires. Wrap it into a cylinder and sew the two long ends together with a thin piece of wire.
Fold the hardware cloth over the metal bowl. Using hands and any tools necessary (hammers and mallets come to mind), form the domed end. Place your hand into the bowl and roll it on a hard surface to smooth and compress the pleats.
Drill pilot holes in the middle of your wooden turning(s). Place a washer inside the cloche and thread the screw through the washer and into the turning(s) on the top, sandwiching the hardware cloth between the washer and the turnings.
