Mother's Day Button Card

Remember when your mother "burst her buttons" because she was so proud of you? Don't you think it is time to replace them?

Materials
#6 plastic takeout covers
StazOn black ink
cardstock
copy paper

Tools
scissors
sandpaper
colored pencils or colored markers
rubber stamp or medium point permanent black marker
hole paper punch
toaster oven or heat gun
needle and thread
glue stick

Look for # 6 plastic. It's available on most take-out container lids. Look for the embossed 6 in a triangle. This is poor man's "Shrinky Dinks".

I tried to photograph the "6" logo on the plastic. The only photo that came out was this one. I hope you get the idea.

Sand the plastic so that the pencils or markers will adhere. Color the plastic with the pencils and then either stamp the flower design over the color or draw a simple daisy with the black permanent marker. The flower should be about 2" in diameter. Allow the ink to dry then cut out the flower and punch the holes. I don't know my hole sizes, but this is the one for punching holes in binder paper.

Place in toaster oven at about 300 degrees or heat with heat gun. In just a few minutes the flower will curl up and shrink a bit more than 50%. *A note: the plastic does not shrink evenly. A round shape will more than likely shrink as an oval. The colors will be more intense when it shrinks.

The buttons should flatten out when fully shrunk but if they don't, use a spatula to flatten them while they are still warm.

Make six buttons for each card.

Download the card here. (I have positioned it on the page so that you can fold it over like a greeting card or you may cut it out like a button card) Print it on a piece of cardstock and sew the buttons on with needle and thread. I folded the thread several times before I put it through the eye of the needle, that way I only had to sew each button once to achieve a solidly sewn look.

If you do not have an envelope to hold this sized card, cut a piece of copy paper into a 7 1/2" square. Position the card diagonally in the middle of the square and fold the points over the card beginning with the bottom. Cut off the point on the bottom fold and the "ears" on flap. (I have indicated this with dotted lines) Use a glue stick to seal the envelope.

Great idea! I've been wanting to do something with shrinky dinks (never used them, I know, I think I'm the only one :) I like this idea of reusing take out covers. Thank you for the tutorial.

Thanks for sharing the #6 info. When I was a kid - long before "shrinky dinks" came out, we made such things with the lids of the containers that calves liver came in - seriously - and we called them "liver lid ornaments". I have no idea where my mom learned about that. The butcher would sell us stacks of liver lids.

Make sure you have good ventilation, the fumes from this are really unhealthy and carcinogens! I do love melting things though...
