Now showcase your hard work in one spectacular bouquet.
Now is the time to channel your inner Sylvia Weinstock, the preeminent New York cake maker to the stars. Her gorgeous cakes can be seen here.
To make decorating your cake a bit easier, cut a piece of thin plastic (I used a Cool Whip container lid) to the desired size and shape. Hot glue your flowers onto it. This will be your cake topper. Cascade some of the flowers down one side of the cake and place the rest around the base.
I was warned that buttercream frosting (I can't stand the taste of fondant) would soften the gum paste flowers. I had mine on a cake for 24 hours and they didn't soften at all.
The gum paste to make all of these flowers costs less than $10. The two store bought cakes were less than $20. For $30, several hours of flower making and minimum skills, you have a cake that looks like a million bucks.
Sylvia, eat your heart out.
